I recently found myself Googling “things to do during the summer holidays with children’, as my beau and I have promised our niece some aunty and uncle fun. In my quest for inspiration I came across a GQ feature written by Sarah Turner aka The Unmumsy Mum, in which she challenges the notion held by some parents that summer holidays are not something that should be ‘survived’ but rather ‘treasured’. Whilst there’s no denying that quality time with your brood is wonderful, a whole summer of entertaining can seem rather daunting. Whether you’ve managed to scramble together the last remnants of annual leave to spend a week with the little darlings or you’re chief entertainer for the full six weeks, it’s a world away from holidays of by gone days that were spent with a cocktail in one hand and the Costa Book of the Year in the other. Of course, we wouldn’t have it any other way….but in case you didn’t know it, WSd is a lifestyle store and we love making you feel as fabulous and confident in your life as possible. So, with that in mind we’ve put together our top picks of school holiday essentials to make that survival a little more joyful…
Hitchin based design house Sas and Yosh has become a firm fave in WSD, loved by adults and children alike for their funky tees and sweats. Did you know they also design wallpaper, stationery, homewares and prints?! Sarah (Sas) and Yoshie (Yosh) are the ultra cool creators at the helm and channel a vibe of ‘Britain meets Japan in a riot of cool design and illustration”. The Leopard Crew Collection was the first to be stocked in WSd and the 100% organic sweatshirts, available in both adult and child size, flew off the rails. The collection has grown ever since and the Leaping Leopard kids’ sweatshirts are a dreamy addition. Whether your cherub chooses pink or blue, they’re crafted from organic cotton and feature a screen print on the front and star embroidery on one sleeve. Available from 3-4 to 9-11 years, these super soft beauties are perfect for every age and loved by all, from tiny toddlers to pre-teen divas. Adding colour and fun to those days when you (and your purse!) just can’t handle another day out, the brand’s cotton tees are emblazoned with quirky digital prints that are certain to make “I don’t want to wear that” battles a thing of the past. Perfect for bringing on holiday too, the soft cotton credentials of each piece make them a dreamily comfy companion to beach days or intrepid exploring.
Traditional baby milestone cards are a wonderful way to record and remember significant moments in your baby’s life- the first smile, first steps and first word. But what about the moments that happen in between- the not so delightful but just as important moments? Well This Mama Does has created alternative but absolutely spot on milestone cards that will document the times when ‘Teething Sucks’ or ‘Shit Just Happened’. Christina Pickworth is the brains and mother behind This Mama Does, a business idea that came to her one day “in a haze of potty training and chicken pox fuelled cabin fever”. She wanted to create ‘a little something to help parents navigate the everyday milestones of parenthood, with a smile and a photo (and a G&t!)” Of course, the fact that you’re on holiday doesn’t eradicate the challenges of parenthood and the This Mama Does Holiday Cards are a hilarious prop for family vacay snaps.
If you’re used to an injection of caffeine to get you pumped before taking on the day then don’t forgo your morning fix over the summer holidays-chances are you’re going to need it even more. Invest in a Hitchin Keep Cup- a reusable cup that’s perfect for grabbing coffee on the go. When you take on the role of a parent you’re immediately denied the luxury of finishing a cuppa whilst it’s still hot but the heavy duty BPA-free plastic of the Keep Cup will keep your drink warmer for longer so you might have slightly more chance. On the flip side, a Chilly Bottle will ensure you have cold water on-the-go which will not only help towards a plastic-free summer but also means the drinks are sorted for impromptu picnics in the park.
If you’re planning a UK break or are making the most of being at home then you’ve probably chosen the best summer to do so. We’ve been blessed with weather that would rival Espania, but hilariously now we’re all desperate for a bit of rain! Plus would a holiday in blightly be complete without a soggy tent or defiantly lying on the beach under a makeshift towel blanket?! A Rains jacket is a must to ensure morale remains high despite a downpour- and although it may be hard to believe, these wonders really are 100% water and windproof. Plus the peaked cap makes life so much easier when you’re battling horizontal rain, pushing a buggy and restraining a toddler. G&T to go with that jacket??!! The Rains Duffle bag will also prove its worth as a trusty holiday and beach companion- make sure you spot it at baggage reclaim with the Emilie Coxhead Adventure luggage tag.
To aid the survival, alone time is a must and what better way to re-centre yourself than with a spot of outdoor yoga. This summer, the haven that is The Yoga Shed is taking its classes to many a Hitchin hot spot so you can enjoy the ecstasy of Savasana whilst gazing at the clouds above you.
You got this!
